Shimmering Wall Sculptures

We have discovered artist El Anatsui's wall hangings in pictures only and just need to find one to see up close. The texture, detail, skill and majestic size is so appealing. A sales trip to New York is potentially planned for July and there is one of Anatsui's pieces in the contemporary collections at the MOMA.

Closer to home it looks like the October Gallery has two of Anatsui's pieces on show in their 'Masters of the Transvangarde' exhibition from 23 May - 3 August. A must see.

A trip to County Durham

The most recent bank holiday weekend was spent exploring County Durham. Vast landscapes, rural life, winding roads, rugged moorland, deserted farmhouses. All pretty spectacular...

Saul Bass

Saul Bass, who died in 1996, would have celebrated his 93rd birthday today.
Google have made a tribute in the form of an animated sequence based on his designs for fim title credits, film posters and corporate logos.
We particularly enjoyed the blog The Fox Is Black's tribute after a recent visit to the Stanley Kubrick exhibition in Los Angeles. Great to see the preliminary sketches of the film poster for the film, The Shining as well as his signature...
Here are some of our favourite of his film posters...

Don't forget your roots.

We've always loved old ties. Hand-me-downs, charity shop finds, bottom of the wardrobe finds... these were the ties that inspired Marwood's first collection. The items you can't find today. We have now extended this brief to ourselves to encourage innovation. It doesn't stop us appreciating a really good woven UK made tie though. We snapped this of friend Toby at a wedding this weekend...

Playful Pocket Squares

We were happy to see Life of Pi actor Suraj Sharma pop up on the Mr Porter feed wearing the bestselling Marwood mesh lace pocket square in ecru. A simple statement but one we like to continue. It is also available in navy.
Check out the Mr Porter Journal here....
The navy cotton square last in the row is exclusive to buy from the
Marwood online shop. The cotton is lighter than the normal silk
squares we make and has a batiq-effect pattern. We recommend it.
Marwood silk houndstooth pocket square featured on the Financial
Times 'How To Spend It' list. Also available to buy on Mr Porter.
These faded effect silk patterns are available exclusively
on the Marwood online shop - see HERE

PATTERNITALK

Last night we went to a Patternitalk - an event created by Patternity co-founders Anna Murray and Grace Winteringham. They invited the following guest speakers to discuss how pattern shapes their own practice...

Lily Silverton (Director/Film Maker/Fashion Features
Editor at POP Magazine),
Katie Gaudion RCA (Multi-disciplinary textile designer),
Katherine Hamnett (Fashion Designer CBE) and
Kathryn Ferguson (Artist and Filmmaker).

It was a really interesting evening and inspiring to hear successful, creative women doing so well. Katherine Hamnett's confident, unswayed vision in her work, human rights and world issues; Lily Silverton's striking, monochrome film collaboration with Patternity; Katie's creation of a Springy-Thingy Pouf to benefit children who suffer from autism spectrum disorder and Kathryn Ferguson, a filmmaker originally from Belfast who spoke of her influences and inspirations that put meaning and reason behind all that she creates. We can see why Kathryn was the perfect person for Selfridges to assign their brief to make a film to commemorate International Women's Day 2013. We love the results and wanted to share the film with you...

In addition to boats...

Christopher  Wood painted people.

Following on from the below write-up of the 'Amongst Heroes'
exhibition we found some more non-boat artwork that also appealed
- by Christopher Wood.

A dapper chap himself.

2 Temple Place - London

The mission last week was to pay a visit to 'AMONGST HEROES - The Artist In Working Cornwall' before it ended on Sunday. The curator, Roo Gunzi, did a wonderful job of displaying a collection of admirable British art. It provided a close-up history of working England - in particular the Cornish corner of the country and its fishing industry. The works of art are normally housed in some local museums in Cornwall but mainly were borrowed from private collections - so it really felt like a fortunate and rarer experience to see them all together. All the works were traditional oil paintings and there were a few that really appealed - particularly one by Christopher Wood, basically the more modern work between 1920s-40s. The situ for the exhibition was Two Temple Place and this was an experience in itself. The building was at 2 Temple Place, right next to Somerset House. It was stunning... wood panelled walls, mosaic floors and intricate stain glass windowed ceilings. The wood carvings were works of art in themselves and it reminded you that London has some beautiful, historic buildings inside and out. 2 Temple Place is only open to the public during the annual exhibition (the first one debuted last year showcasing William Morris' works). However being a friend allows you a guided tour... perfect for a rainy London day.
